Philippine Literature: My Novel Short-Listed for the Cirilo F. Bautista Prize for the Novel!!!




Good news this morning --- my novel, Dead Priest in the Creek, is 1 of 8 Short-Listed for the Cirilo F. Bautista Prize for the Novel. The winner will be revealed on October 12, 2015 ---- but as far as I'm concerned I'm already a winner!

Thank you judges for finding merit in my new novel, which is as of yet unpublished.

Out of 73 qualified entries, eight titles made the shortlist. They are: “Dead Priest in the Creek” by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard, “Isang Pelikula Tungkol sa mga Larawan ng mga Lumang Bulalakaw, mga Sirang Ferris Wheel, mga Nakalutang na Rooftop, mga Putol na Overpass at mga Wasak na Time Machine” by Rick Jay T. Cabillo, “Mga Bulong ng Anino at Tahimik” by Eric John Betita Villena, “Sa (Loob at Labas ng Kagila-gilalas na) Daigdig ni Atô” by Frank G. Rivera, “The Disappearance of the Rose” by Patria Rivera, “The Lady in Blue Armani” by Maria L. M. Fres-Felix, “Uberman” by Zeno Antonio Denolo, and “When Will this War End” by Raymundo Pandan, Jr.
The distinguished Board of Judges is composed of: National Artist for Literature Cirilo F. Bautista (chair), Katrina Tuvera, Roland Tolentino, Dean Francis Alfar, and Joselito Delos Reyes.
A grand prize of Php100,000 (one hundred thousand pesos) will be awarded. The winner will be revealed on 12 October 2015. The awards ceremony will be held on 14 November 2015.
This competition seeks to encourage a greater production of the novel in our country and ensure its high-quality standard with the provision of a monetary reward to the best of the writing. It is organized by the De La Salle University Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center, and co-sponsored by the DLSU Angelo King Institute for Economics and Business Studies (AKI) and the DLSU Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (VCRI). It has received the endorsement of the National Committee on the Literary Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCLA NCCA).
Bautista, whose name the award honors, has a remarkable corpus which includes “Things Happen” (poetry, 2014), “Believe and Betray” (poetry, 2006), “The Trilogy of Saint Lazarus” (epic poetry, 2001), “Galaw ng Asoge” (novel, 2004), “The House of True Desire: Essays about Life and Literature” (2011), among many others. His other awards and prizes include: Philippine Centennial Prize for Epic Poetry, Manila Critics Circle’s National Book Awards, Don Carlos Palanca Hall of Fame Award, Gawad Jose Corazon de Jesus, Diwang Lahi-Gawad Antonio Villegas at Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan, Gawad Balagtas by the Unyon ng mga Manunulat ng Pilipinas (UMPIL), Taboan Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and Gawad CCP Para sa Sining by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, among others.
